Description: | Tar River Land Conservancy (TRLC) seeks applications for a 12-week
internship during the summer of 2006. TRLC will hire up to two interns
with this announcement. This internship will provide extensive exposure
to and hands on experience with a regionally-based land trust. TRLC
preserves the natural and cultural resources of the Upper Tar River Basin
by working in partnership with private landowners, businesses, public
agencies, and others to protect rural landscapes and riparian corridors.
The Upper Tar is located in the northeastern Piedmont and Upper Coastal
Plain of North Carolina and runs from the headwaters of the Tar River in
Person County to the convergence of the Tar River, Fishing Creek and Sandy
Creek north of Tarboro in Edgecombe County. Harboring sixteen rare and
endangered aquatic species, this area is one of the most ecologically
important watersheds on the eastern seaboard and is home to two federally
endangered aquatic species, and five Federal Species of Concern. The
Upper Tar is also designated as one of the ?Last Great Places? by The
Nature Conservancy, a significant partner of TRLC. Since the TRLC was
founded in 2000, we have protected over 6,000 acres of land.

1. Prepare and revise land conservation plans that guide the TRLC land
protection program. Conduct basic GIS analysis and prepare maps,
spreadsheets, and draft reports.
2. Collect field data on properties targeted for protection to evaluate
natural, recreational and cultural resources present on tracts. Obtain
deeds, plats, and related documents from Registries of Deeds for targeted
parcels.
3. Assist in preparation of reports to document conditions of properties
being protected using conservation easements.
4. Monitor properties protected by TRLC to ensure compliance with
conservation easements and deed restrictions.
5. Contribute photos and articles to TRLC member newsletter.
