- Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of this physically demanding position. Positions may require a physical examination at the applicant\'s expense.
- Applicants should have experience with maps, compass, aerial photos, and be familiar with using them for wilderness navigation, and point location.
- Applicants should have completed a dendrology course, and be familiar with Western tree species.
- Applicant should be capable of managing their finical travel budget: paying for hotels, meals, tracking receipts, and submitting claims. Employees will be reimbursed per State Travel Regulations.
- Hired individuals will need to provide sturdy hiking boots, personal rain gear, tent, sleeping bag, multi-day backpack and all other necessary camping gear.
- Positions require individuals selected to possess a valid State driver\'s license.
- General Experience includes any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provides a familiarity with the subject matter, either forestry or natural resource data collection. Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically related to the work of the position being filled. |

Description: | - Conducts ecological field inventory as part of a two or three-person crew.
- Locates field plots by interpreting maps and aerial photos, determining scale of aerial photos, running compass lines, chaining distances, and using GPS equipment.
- Cruises, Measures and records field data on the physical characteristics of the sample area; the size; age; and condition of sample trees.
- Duties are primarily mensuration oriented, although the incumbent may be asked to perform a variety of field measurements including, but not limited to, those involving vegetation diversity, lichen diversity, ozone monitoring and soil and erosion data collection.
- Fieldwork often involves long hikes, steep terrain, inclement weather conditions and occasional overnight camping in remote areas. A substantial amount of equipment and personal gear is carried to all plots by backpack.
- While traveling, field crews live in hotels, or camp out and change locations frequently. They usually work Monday thru Thursday. The hours of work vary greatly, but average about ten hours a day. Transportation is provided to and from the work sites; in addition, government transportation is available for necessities such as meals, laundry, and worship services. |
