REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. or B.A. in Wildlife Science or a related discipline; Field research experience, boat handling experience, and knowledge of seabird biology ; Applicants must be able to swim, sit for long periods of time, crawl through tunnels to access blinds, look through binoculars or spotting scopes, and have a valid driver’s license. Description:
This position has both field and lab components. In the field the successful applicant will serve as Field Crew Leader and will be located in or near Astoria, OR from approximately March 15-August 15. The Field Crew Leader coordinates activities for a field crew comprised of approximately 8-10 seasonal technicians and interns, relays detailed instructions to field crew members, monitors data collection and adherence to data collection protocols by the field crew, is responsible for communicating with the field coordinator, and makes quick decisions in the event of unforeseen situations. The successful applicant must be willing to live in the provided field housing in or near Astoria, OR and work long hours and weekends during the field season. The lab component of the position will be in Corvallis, OR during the remainder of the year. The lab component includes sole responsibility for all soft tissue and fishbone identification in diet samples collected from piscivorous waterbirds during the field season. This will include the use of chemicals to break down unidentifiable soft tissue and heavy microscope use to identify diagnostic bones. Also responsible for entering, analyzing, and summarizing data collected in the field and in the lab. Lethal collection is one method used to obtain the diet samples, the successful applicant must be comfortable with this philosophy.
