Description: | A graduate research assistantship is available in September 2006 for a student to pursue a Master of Science degree in Ecology and Environmental Science (EES) at the University of Maine. This is an interdisciplinary research project involving the Department of Plant, Soil, and Environmental Sciences (PSE) and the Department of Wildlife Ecology (WE). The student will be co-advised by faculty in both departments (Dr. David Yarborough [PSE], Dr. Frederick Servello [WE]). This position will provide a stipend and tuition waiver for a graduate student to study wild turkey activity and its effects on wild blueberry production in Maine. Student research will focus on turkey use of blueberry fields for foraging and ascertain effects on blueberry production. Other potential research includes studies on the relative use of habitats in this system and effects of turkey foraging on invertebrate populations in blueberry fields. Project scope will depend on the future availability of external funding. The research will entail cooperative interaction with wild blueberry growers, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and other professionals. The wild blueberry industry is a major agricultural sector in Maine with 60,000 acres in the state, and the expanding wild turkey population in Maine and their use of wild blueberry fields by turkeys has raised concerns about crop losses.
