over steep terrain for 10 hours/day.
DESIRED: College coursework or field experience in botany/horticulture,
resource management, or environmental science; experience using GPS and/or
database management; ability to work with power equipment and 4WD vehicles;
experience and interest in working in a group and individually with minimal
supervision under physically challenging conditions. |

BACKGROUND: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), in partnership with
the National Park Service (NPS), is taking part in a nationwide effort to
eradicate invasive plants. After habitat loss, invasive species are
considered the greatest threat to global diversity. A team of one National
Park Service crew leader and four interns will focus on controlling
invasive plants in 18 National Park units in seven southeastern states and
will be based at the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, NC. |

Description: | Implement and document invasive plant management control
methods including manual, mechanical, and chemical techniques using chainsaws, pole saws, brushcutters, assorted hand tools, manual and gas
powered sprayers,4WD and all-terrain vehicles, and GPS/GIS.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES: manual and chemical tool usage and safety; use of GPS/GIS and various database and computer programs; invasive plant and native plant identification; off-road and defensive driving skills; First
Aid/CPR; ATV use; Red Card (wildland fire) certification
chainsaws, pole saws, brushcutters, assorted hand tools, manual and gas
powered sprayers,4WD and all-terrain vehicles, and GPS/GIS. |
Salary: | $160/week stipend |
Benefits: | Base housing will be provided and will be a shared apartment in Asheville; while traveling, accommodations will include
motels and park housing; all travel expenses are covered by the National
Park Service. Possible AmeriCorps Education Award available; |
