ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications prior to employment: • Ph.D. in recreation, nature-based tourism or related natural resources field (at least one graduate degree should emphasize recreation management or nature-based tourism) and a strong foundation in a related discipline such as economics, geography, marketing, business/public administration, sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, or related fields. • Evidence of ability to develop and manage an active research program, to include a record of publication and professional presentation. • Demonstrated or potential for excellence in teaching. Preferred qualifications include: • Teaching experience at the university level on related subjects. • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and assessment of undergraduate and graduate students in recreation management, nature-based tourism or other aspects of natural resource management. • Willingness to develop beneficial relationships with external constituencies such as public land management agencies and/or the tourism industry. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, resource managers, and the general public. • Demonstrated success in securing research funding. • Ability to recruit and mentor research-oriented graduate students. • Publications in peer-reviewed journals. • Willingness to mentor members of underrepresented groups. • Active participation in professional organizations. • Preference may be given to applicants whose research complements existing programs in the College of Forestry and Conservation, and The University of Montana.

Description:
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The College of Forestry and Conservation at The University of Montana – Missoula seeks an Assistant Professor of Recreation Management, with emphasis in Nature-based Tourism and/or Recreation Resource Management to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in recreation management and tourism, and to conduct research and outreach with natural resource agencies, rural communities, and the tourism industry. The Department is especially interested in candidates who contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through their research, teaching, and service. The position is a full-time, nine-month tenure track appointment with approximately 67% teaching and 33% research responsibilities, expected to begin fall semester 2006. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop a program of nationally recognized research and scholarship in the area of recreation management and planning and/or nature-based tourism.
• Teach 9-12 credits per year in the recreation management degree programs. Courses could include an introductory course in recreation or tourism; a senior-level course in recreation planning, wildland recreation management, or tourism and sustainability; and a graduate level course in her or his specialty.
• Participate in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and teaching projects with faculty in the College of Forestry and Conservation and related programs.
• Recruit and mentor graduate students; advise undergraduate students possibly including those on field practicum experiences.
• Actively engage in service roles within the Department, the College, the University, and professional groups and associations.
• Interact and work with external industry, academic, and other professional groups and associations.
