Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-4 level:
A. Have successfully completed 2 years of study that included at least 12
semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such
as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany,
physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours were
directly related to the position.
B. Have at least 6 months of general experience and 6 months of
specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 level in the Federal
service that provided me with the ability to perform the duties of the
position. General experience is (1) work that demonstrates the ability to
perform the duties of the position, or (2) experience that provided a
familiarity with biological work. Examples of qualifying specialized
experience include taking scientific measurements and performing simple
mathematical calculations; keeping detailed and precise records in order to
collect and report data; and any other work that is performed in a
controlled environment which includes research activity or control program
work.
C. I do not have undergraduate education described in A above, and I do not
have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience
described in B above. However, I have an equivalent combination of
undergraduate education which included 12 semester hours in any combination
of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics,
entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics
AND qualifying generalized or specialized experience at the GS-3 grade
level or higher. If education is used to meet the specialized experience
requirement, 6 semester hours must be directly related to the position. See website for details. |

characteristics. Makes preliminary assesment of such things as habitat
preference and population dynamics. Collects data on condition of forage
and range. Makes preliminary determinations of the cause of problems
noted, e.g., drought, overpopulation, or toxins. Leads small group of
technicians in gathering field data. Prepares drafts for sections of field
reports. Researches and extracts data from publications and manuscripts.
Uses traps and nets to capture birds for study, measurement, and banding.

recommendations for improvements in methods and procedures. Leads a small
group of lower graded technicians in gathering field data and provides
necessary training in techniques and procedures. Conducts surveys to
collect and analyze various types of information on bird populations such
as habitat use, sex and age structure, seasonal movement, breeding and
foraging ecology data, behavioral data, population abundance, and harvest
