To be basically qualified for this job, you must have: A. Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility. OR B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major (upper level coursework) in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. Description:
Prepares soil maps by identifying and classifying soil types and phases from data
collected at field sites. Prepares data documents including pedon descriptions,
transect observations, and field notes. Studies the characteristics of soils and
makes recommendations for their use and management. Integrates soil survey
information with other phases of the soil and water conservation program.
Performs field tests for soil mapping and soil classification. Assists the
project leader in defining and establishing mapping units. Performs on-site
investigations and provides interpretive data, as assigned. Provides training to
NRCS personnel and others in soils and soil survey, as assigned.

Writes technical and non-technical materials dealing with soils and the soil
survey; assists in developing the soil survey manuscript, including preparing map
unit descriptions, taxonomic unit descriptions, and other materials, as assigned.
Performs soil map compilation, as assigned. Collects soil samples for analyses in
the soil survey laboratory.

Assists in developing data and interpretations for the soils in the assigned area
and enters this information into the NASIS database. Uses GIS to develop soils
maps and to produce maps for customers.
