Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Wildlife, Forestry or closely related field and a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in wildlife, forestry, natural community restoration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with Midwestern flora and fauna, ability to classify Missouri natural communities and experience with natural community management including prescribed fire and ability to use GIS strongly desired. Ability to accept all responsibilities of the job and assigned tasks. Ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work and programs. Ability to keep focused on understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of customers (whether Department employees or the general public). Description:
Provides Department leadership and coordination for
administration of the Missouri Natural Areas Program as stipulated in the
interagency Memorandum of Agreement(s) with the Missouri Department of
Conservation, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service, and The Nature Conservancy; prepares natural area
nominations and provides technical support for Natural Area nominations in
the Missouri Natural Areas System; conducts field inventories of
candidate natural areas and provides technical training to Department staff to do same; reviews, prepares and presents Natural Areas nominations
to the Department Natural Areas Committee and the Missouri Natural
Areas Committee and facilitates nomination presentations within the
two Committees; coordina tes the development and implementation of
objectives and strategies for the management and public use of natural areas; reviews management objectives for Natural Areas and other lands of natural history interest; organizes and conducts natural area/natural community management field trips and technical workshops for
Department staff, other agencies, and other partner organizations;
coordinates and provides technical assistance in the production of annual status reports; reviews research proposals and permit requests
concerning Natural Areas and works with Department staff on special
Natural Area management projects; assists in the development and
implementation of Department policies, procedures and guidelines regarding units
of the Missouri Natural Areas System managed by the Department;
organizes and facilitates meetings and other activities of the Department Natural Areas Commi ttee and the Missouri Natural Areas Committee;
coordinates the two Natural Areas committees' business activities; serves
as administrative manager of the Natural Areas master files and
other documentation; prepares Natural Area input for all Department
planning or strategic initiatives; ensures consideration of Natural
Areas in MDC regional and conservation area planning; participates in
interagency efforts to develop or update Natural Areas strategies for
completion of a statewide Natural Areas system; supervises and trains staff
on field work and administrative duties; provides technical support as
a department specialist in the classification, description and
management of natural communities; conducts training workshops and
provides one-on-one support to Department staff on management and
identification of natural communities; coordinates with other divisions to
provide metrics and monitoring protocols, evaluate actions, and report
progress; remains current in techniques and new approaches for natural
area management; represents Wildlife Division on Heritage Database
Working Group for natural community and natural area elements;
provides program support to the Wildlife Programs Supervisor on a variety of
topics and issues; serves on committees and working groups representing
Wildlife Division; and performs other duties as required.
Salary:
Beginning salary will be $36,384 to $39,336 depending on qualifications.
