Duties
The incumbent will assist refuge managers and biologists with daily refuge operations and programs to gain skills and experience in wildlife habitat management and public service. Duties will include: conducting surveys for shorebirds, swans, cranes, sage grouse, waterfowl and raptors; collecting data using a Trimble GPS unit; controlling invasive weeds through mechanical or chemical means; entering and summarizing data in ArcGIS; drafting survey and field reports; installing or repairing various structures, signs and fences; cleaning up debris and organizing materials; and assisting with environmental education programs and public use activities and events.
A great percent of time will be spent developing a vegetation map. The projects goals are to produce a vegetation map, which represents the refuge’s current plant associations for managers to use in developing habitat management strategies. The incumbent will work with the refuge staff to ground truth infrared aerial images and collect vegetation data. The position will require using a Trimble GPS unit with ArcPad software for collecting vegetation data using Refuge Lands GIS (RLGIS) databases and transfer and enter data into a GIS database using ArcView and ArcGIS software. Plant identification skills and experience with Rocky Mountain high desert plant communities will be a plus.
