Description: | The succesful applicant will work as a wildlife technician and ill be primarily concerned in the participation of a collaborative research and outreach program involving the Ga Wildlife Services Program, Tall Timbers Research Station, Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, Auburn University, The University of Georgia, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The study is entitled Wildlife Management and Gamebird Restoration Project and the study objective is to determine whether management and control of mammalian predators during the Spring and Summer will provide landowners with a means of enhancing wildlife production and population on their land. The second portion of this position involves outreach to extend research results to landowners as well as to inform and provide technical and operational assistance to the public experiencing human-wildlife conflicts. This work will help to reduce problems caused by carnivores, deer, birds, beaver, and other animals found in urban and rural environments. Additional major duties include: Provide technical and direct predator operations for the Project, Independently and successfully reduce predators including racoons, opossums, armadillos, skunks, foxes, bobcat, coyotes, and feral species on a 5,000 acre site within the study design of the Project. Management tools may include trapping, snares, bait stations, shooting, spotlighting, hunting, dogs, and other lethal and non-lethal controls as identified. Interact with and assist research personnel with other tasks pertaining to the Project, such as scent stations, call counts, and quail trapping. Develop expertise in wildlife damage management strategies and techniques including the trapping, shooting, baiting, and hunting of mammalian predators. Participate in public outreach and program building in the management of other wildlife damage management problems when workload demands from the major Project allow. Independtly assume responsibility for safe and wise use of equipment and respect for private property rules and regulations. Record and compile date legibly, accurately, and pertinent to field operations. Collaborate with supervisor and participants of the Project in preparations of study goals as well as internal and external reports based on management operations. Operate government owned, leased, or rented motor vehicles and off-road conveyances in a safe and prudent manner to conduct field operations. Assume responsibility for the government owned vehicle maintenance, asociated records, and compilation of necessary reports. Independently plan work schedules, field operations, and modify or adapt existing management techniques. Assume responsibility of equipment and proper disposition and/or necropsy of captured animals for the purpose of removal of specific samples. Record data legibly, accurately, and pertinent to filed operations. Cooperate and maintain working relationships with personnel from other agencies, institutions, and private landowners. Perform other dutes as assigned. Prepare reports of field operation progress. |
