FFA FIELD DAY AT THE PHOENIX

On November 10, 2005 the UGA Forestry Club hosted the third annual FFA Forestry Field Day at Flinchum’s Phoenix and Whitehall Forest. Also helping sponsor this event was the Warnell School of Forest Resources, Alpha Gamma Rho Agricultural Fraternity, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Georgia FFA. The field day is meant to be a fun competition, a learning experience, and a way to show high school students higher educational and career opportunities in the field of natural resources. Warnell faculty members as well as other professionals were on hand to lead each event with assistance from forestry club members and other WSFR students. Competitions included dendrology, reforestation, ocular estimation, land measurement, hand compass practicum, timber stand improvement, cruising for cord volume, cruising for board ft. volume, tree/forest disorders, and forest management.

Six high schools participated in this year’s field day, bringing eight teams and 85 registered students. First and Second place went to both teams from Bleckley Co. high school. After competing, the students were fed by Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at the AGR house and were given a bus tour of south campus by WSFR Ambassador Ty Brooks and WSFR Forestry student Bynum Boley.
