Squirrels

The only squirrel management technique available to most landowners is to insure mature hardwoods, particularly oaks and hickories, are left in the woodlot to provide food and dens. If the woodlot is adjacent to a field, plant corn along the border. Where den trees are absent or in short supply, artificial dens, 10 $\prime\prime\times$10 $\prime\prime\times$20$\prime\prime$, with a 2$\frac{1}{2}$ inch diameter opening on the side, can be put up in the woodlot.

Plantings which could be used in openings or along field borders are corn, corn-soybean mixtures, and sunflowers.
