Warnell School of Forest Resources
The school of forest resources is, in and of itself, somewhat confusing. There are 4 buildings in the complex. These are commonly referred to as buildings 1-4.
Building 1 faces what the pedestrian mall (used to be DW Brooks Drive) and the Pharmacy school. This is the oldest of the forest resources buildings. Building 1 houses two undergraduate computer labs (at the northern and southern ends of the 2nd floor) that may be used by graduate students, as well.
However, do not change any passwords for your Groupwise accounts from these labs. If you do, you can change your permissions for certain resources available for grad students without even knowing it.
Building one also houses classrooms, graduate offices, and Dr. Hendrick's (Associate Dean) office.
Building 2 is actually sandwiched between building 1 and building 3. If you did not know any better, you would not even realize this is a separate building. However, it is. Building 2 houses a majority of the clerical staff, the Dean's office, the Dean's conference room, the mail room, and a couple of sets of bathrooms.
Building 3 is at the east end of the complex and faces the Life Sciences building and the parking lot. This building houses many faculty offices (particularly for wildlife faculty and biotech faculty). Building 3 has an odd bathroom scheme, so beware.
Building 4 is the newest building at the south end of the complex. It houses many of the forestry faculty offices and graduate student offices. There are several conference rooms throughout for use by class or as a quiet place to study.
Computer Labs are located on the 2nd floor of Building 1 and the 5th floor of Building 4. The Graduate computer lab is located on the 5th floor of building 4. Key card access is usually required for entry, and undergraduates are typically not allowed access. The graduate lab also houses (in a separate room) the GIS computer lab which contains high-powered workstations, digitizing boards, etc.
Computers are somewhat of a wonder. No less so in Warnell. There are several things you should be aware of with respect to the computers provided for your use:
Mail is occasionally cleaned out of the server in similar fashion to files as mentioned above. Mail is archived on the server. Descriptions of how to get to this mail may be found here.
Class Locations around UGA are typically denoted like so: 1040-125 where the first number indicates the building and the second gives the room number. All buildings on campus have one of these 4 digit codes. A key to the codes can be found here. Within Warnell, rooms are designated by 4-132. The first number refers to the building and the second gives the room numer.
Keys may be found by contacting Joyce Black (in clerical offices). You must pay various deposits for your first and subsequent keys, all of which will be returned in full upon return of the key.
Library
The library is where you will likely spend A LOT of time at some
point (hopefully). In fact, there are two libraries on the UGA campus.
The largest is the Main Library, located on north campus
between the School of Law and Baldwin Street. The best way to get to
the Library is to take a North/South or Family Housing bus from the Georgia
Center (located across the pedestrian mall and behind
the Pharmacy School). However, the Science Library is probably the one you will
use most often. It is located in the Graduate School
building that is off the pedestrian mall. This is about a 3
minute walk from the front door of building 1 of the forestry complex. Perhaps the best option is to go to www.libs.uga.edu
where you can access the online catalogue, the Galileo system (access
to online databases) or view the online journals provided.
Places to eat
The
Creamery
This closest location to the Warnell where you can get some food. The
creamery (or "Reamery" as it is occasionally called) provides soups,
sandwiches, salads, snacks, and drinks every day during normal business
hours. They also provide ice-cream, but, sadly, it is no longer made on
site.
Other places that are on campus to eat include Snelling Dining Hall (all you can eat for 7 or 8 bucks - plenty of undergrads here), the Georgia Center, and the Bulldog Cafe (in Tate Student Center).
DowntownYou can also get downtown very easily using the campus bus system. Your best option from Warnell is the Family Housing bus which stops at The Arch right downtown. Ask around for the best places to eat at any given time. These include: The Mayflower, Five Star Day Cafe, The Grill. Happy hour starts at 3:00 downtown at the Uptown Lounge, if you are interested.
