With a recent extension to the deer barn, we now can house 19 deer in individual 10 feet x 16 feet stalls.

These barn stalls allow us to separate individual deer for behavioral studies, or when we must monitor fawning dates or the exact timing of a doe's heat cycle.

Because deer behavior is difficult to monitor continuously during a 24-hour period, we recently equipped 8 barn stalls with surveillance cameras. This technology has greatly improved our research capabilities.

We confine various groups of deer in outdoor pens. Although certain aspects of whitetail biology must be tested with free-ranging deer, many questions can be answered by studying deer in our pens.

Like wild deer, captive deer are creatures of habit. They soon learn the location of gates (i.e., escape routes) and connecting runways. Runways link our outside pens with the barn, providing routine and safe movement of deer.

A rotunda with movable, internal walls allows us to efficiently direct the travel of deer among outside pens, barn stalls, and the deer cradle

In accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, the University of Georgia's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee closely reviews deer-related research. In 1996, based on their suggestions, we installed a deer cradle to minimize handling-related injuries and stress during our experiments.

For the Deer Endowment Fund For decades, white-tailed deer research at the University of Georgia has provided deer hunters and managers with a wealth of new information. In an effort to maintain the excellence of this research program, we are pleased to announce the initiation of the "For the Deer" Endowment Fund. Your tax-deductible donations will enhance research at the University of Georgia Deer Research Facility. Research topics will specifically focus on projects designed to benefitted hunters, sports enthusiasts, and deer managers.
