The Whitehall Deer Research Facility began when
the first 2 deer pens were erected in 1968. In
1985, we constructed a 12-stall barn so that deer
could be more closely monitored during our experiments.
Additional fenced enclosures were erected in 1987.
In 1996, we again renovated the facility, installing
deer handling equipment (i.e., deer cradle and
rotunda) and adding 7 additional barn stalls.
The current research complex encompasses about
6 acres and maintains 60 to 100 white-tailed deer.

Since 1968, numerous scientifically-based experiments have provided hunters, wildlife managers, and researchers with answers to their questions about white-tailed deer biology. If not for this captive deer facility, our knowledge of this species' reproductive processes and behaviors, scent and vocal communications, vision, disease agents, and population social structure likely would now be unknown. In addition, our researchers have provided valuable knowledge about the importance of the timing of deer reproduction, the use of fertility control drugs to manage overabundant deer populations in urban areas, and the use of various drugs to capture wild deer. We hope the focus of future research at the Whitehall Deer Research Facility is driven by the perceived needs of the hunters and biologists that we serve.
The purpose of the facility is 2-fold. First, to provide graduate and undergraduate students with the skills needed to excel as wildlife professionals. Secondly, to conduct research to enhance our understanding of deer physiology, behavioral ecology, and management.
The true value of the facility is best measured by the quality and quantity of student training and research that it has enabled through the years. Under the direction of wildlife faculty, many graduate students have collected data for use in their theses (Masters Degree) or dissertations (Doctorate Degree). Undergraduate students often have conducted experiments in compliance with various classroom assignments. Deer research projects have resulted in numerous presentations and publications.
