Page 101, "Decisions needed in uneven-aged management": Mike
Thompson (Montgomery Community College, Troy, NC) suggests that a #7 be added to the list, entitled "Control
of Competing Vegetation." The competing vegetation (in this case mainly hardwood species) is controlled by chemical or mechanical means when
using the selection system to grow loblolly and shortleaf pine in the South. Prescribed broadcast burning
is another tool that can be used to control competing vegetation, but its use is limited due to the scattered nature and fire-vulnerability of the desired pine reproduction.
