13.1 Equivalent clearcut acres. For the ECA sensitivity study, how low can the maximum ECA percentage go before the problem becomes infeasible? What other constraint caused the infeasibility?

13.2 Spatial goals for spotted owls. As a forest planner, you are interested in evaluating how much of a difference there might be in the net present value of a forest plan when comparing two strategies for achieving spotted owl goals: (1) static reserves or (2) dynamic goals that favor the maintenance of certain-sized core areas, the boundaries of which are not fixed, and a linkage (corridor) of vegetation types exists between core areas, the location of which is not fixed. Discuss the pros and cons of evaluating these options using linear programming and heuristics.

13.2 Spatial goals for red-cockaded woodpeckers. As a manager of an extensive area of southern woodlands, you are concerned that some of your planned activities may affect several clusters of red-cockaded woodpeckers, located both on your property and that of a neighboring landowner. Based on some guidelines from the Fish and Wildlife Service, you determine that there are two specific area of land you must manage differently than your typical management regime: cluster areas, areas around where the cavity trees are located, and foraging areas, where the birds forage on the bark of larger diameter pine trees.

(a) How would you, as a planner, delineate the land types to manage for these red-cockaded woodpecker goals?

(b) Discuss the type of management prescriptions that may be available for the woodpecker cluster and foraging areas.

(c) Would you maintain the foraging areas as static (fixed) areas or not, and why?

(d) Discuss the circumstances under which you might use linear programming to solve this type of problem.

(e) Discuss the circumstances under which you might use heuristics to solve this type of problem.
